JL Marshall & Sons:
Our History
Over 80 years of experience and achievement have made J.L. Marshall & Sons, Inc. (JLM) synonymous with quality building.
During the pre-war years, JLM specialized in custom-built homes and additions. During the WWII years, the firm contributed to the war effort by engaging in projects, which involved maintenance, repairs and additions to retail and manufacturing plants. The post-war boom brought on contracts for commercial buildings, shopping centers and industrial plants. During that time, JLM also became a substantial builder of schools in New England.
One of JLM’s greatest achievements took place in the early 1960s, when they changed the Pawtucket, RI skyline forever by self-performing a 16-story cast-in-place structural system to house the elderly – the first of its kind in RI. Two years later, JLM built a 14-story building in Fall River, MA.
During the recession of the 1970’s, JLM diversified by concentrating on heavy retail and industrial buildings. This helped JLM transgress into water and wastewater treatments plants in the 1980s. Not only did we build these plants, but we learned how to fully operate the plants – giving us the upper hand in these specialized projects. This intricate concrete work would prepare them for some of our most complicated and rewarding work. Throughout the 1980s, we continued to self-perform and added bridges and marine work to our list of diversified projects.
The mid-1990s recession initiated new styles of Construction Management and JLM found a niche for themselves. While other general contractors relinquished their labor force and concentrated on management, JLM brought their much-dedicated workforce together and began specializing as a concrete trade subcontractor. With this “back to basics” approach, well-rounded workforce and superior knowledge, we successfully survived and evolved with each new project.
Currently JLM focuses primarily on the concrete market including: foundations, formwork, structural slabs and colored/stamped concrete – and look forward to new and challenging endeavors as we’ve alway done – since 1933.
